Review of When the Wind Blows (1986) by Kane T — 08 Sep 2010
(3.9 out of 5 Stars) This is a sad -- if not grim -- movie about the lives of an elderly British couple leading up to, and after, a nuclear exchange. The animation is timeless, blending in stop-motion with traditional cel animation in every scene and the plot and scenes are authentic - all the more by the couple's naivete regarding nuclear wars.
But the greatest strength of the film is also its weakness... the pace and plot points are so realistic it's excruciating -- the story moves at a snail's pace and includes the couple's small talk and meanderings, made all the more frustrating by the fact that one actually cares for the characters and wishes they would get a clue every now and then.
