Review of When the Wind Blows (1986) by Kenneth B — 28 May 2012
This appears to be another one of those scandalously underrated British animation films (see my review for The Plague Dogs). It is thoughful and understated, in fact it barely shows anything other than the central couple of characters holed up in their house.
It doesn't need to show anything else, the situation and characterisation say all they need to. When the Wind Blows is far more succinct and subtle than the sledgehammer that was Barefoot Gen (an interesting companion piece) but it's not necessarily any less effective.
It's a slow-burner that's for sure but it deserves to be seen on a wide scale.
