Review of When the Game Stands Tall (2014) by Brian P — 10 Oct 2014
As I predicted the critics panned this movie while the general audience viewed it much more favorably. Art people don't understand sports movies for the most part. And if you really understand athletics and coaching, this is certainly a solid movie.
But I also think most people expect coaches to be some rah-rah type but rather Bob Ladouceur, played by Jim Caviezel, is more like a rock, steady and calm, just what many of his players who come from tough inner-city backgrounds might need.
Ladouceur, certainly took pride in his program, the championsips and the streak, but also realized the streak wasn't really what mattered but the journey to success. He also let his players take ownership in their program and even in the games itself, something rarely done in football coaching circles.
So if you truly understand athletics, coaching and football, you'll think this is a pretty darn good flick. And BTW movie critics, sports are full of cliche's and coaches use them all the time.
We look at them more as metaphors in life but I guess are easily criticized by some movie critics who placed themselves on some knowledge of art pedestal.
