Review of When the Game Stands Tall (2014) by David C — 22 Feb 2015
The son who does every thing he can to gain the approval from his never satisfied father, but not quite as did Friday Night Lights.
The player that gets the full ride only to be killed, but not quite as did The Fifth Quarter.
The coach that defies the odds to continue the legacy of mentoring boys and leading them to become men, but not quite as did Remember the Titans and so many other great football movies.
The cliches are all over this movie. The Christian dynamic plays a small role and was perhaps unfortunately not a significant part of the story.
This movie just did not bring anything different than we have previously seen.
The team speeches were heart felt, but not quite as did We Are Marshall.
The problem here is that despite a good story, nice acting, and powerful moments, this movie is still another football movie that doesn't stand apart from all the rest.
Despite all that, it was a story that needed to be told. It's a true story that includes an unbelievable win streak. Yet the heart of the story is behind a man, a coach gaining the best effort out of his players and giving them an understanding of the concept of teamwork and brotherhood. Football movies have all been great because they have a common bond. Togetherness, leadership, fighting through life's trials, and growing up. To which we all can understand as we remember having these feelings at points in our lives.
This is slightly above average, but I would still recommend it to anyone needing a good, leader heavy, true story.
3 out of 5 stars.
