One of the most popular of rom-coms, this stages the age-old can men and women ever be just friends question and flirts around the subject quite convincingly until a final disappointing slip back into movie-land.

Crystal and Ryan do share a good chemistry and make the film work, and Reiner directs the witty,often insightful script with absolute conviction. The movie makes you believe that romance can blossom from friendship over a long timespan and so achieves its take on the generic romance outcome well.

Its just we all know the realities of life are very different and a more honest ending, as can be found in more recent films such as Once, 500 days of Summer, Before Sunrise etc might have been even stronger.
