Review of When Harry Met Sally... (1989) by Forrest P — 08 Feb 2010
Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan have some of the best on screen chemistry I have ever seen between any actor and actress. They play off each other magnifiscently, but they are aided by a great director and a flawless screenplay.
What really pushes this movie forward is the fact that the characters exhibit traits I think everyone finds in their friends and themselves.
The storyline plays through beautifully. Nothing is cheesy--as I expected it to be--nor is it underplayed. I think part of it can be contributed to luck, but it's hard to imagine a less-talented director working with actors with less chemistry pulling off some of the moments of the film.
It's considered a romantic comedy, but a majority of the picture is focused more of as a buddy-film than a romantic comedy. And I loved this. It made it seem more genuine and real; nothing seemed fabricated. I love it when a film just seems to work simply by telling the story.
That's what's important about what the filmmakers did here. They weren't trying to make a cinema classic. They were just telling the story of what happened when Harry met Sally.
Wonderful, passionate, intelligent, this is one of the best romance movies of all time.
10/10.
