Review of When a Stranger Calls (2006) by Josh G — 12 Oct 2010
'When a Stranger Calls' is a 2006 Remake on the original cult/Slasher film in 1979, where this Remake movie take off with A high-school student traumatized while babysitting by a caller who repeatedly asks, "Have you checked the children?"(Very famous line from the original film) After notifying the police, she is told that the calls are coming from inside the houses (which basically like the trailer it give the film away a lot). The begging intro of the movie made me jump twice already & I think that too many people give it to much criticism, but I can see way they do give the criticism, it does show in a lot of parts of this movie.
The Movie can have its boring moments, cheesy teenage acting, & pointless thrills (I am admitting that after watching this movie for the fourth time now) but I do find it to be creepy, having un-settling moments & some light thrills & chills (mainly for teenage that are scared at anything really, (cough myself) when I was that type of age but know that am 19 it not as thrilling as when I first watched it when I was age 15 (Yes I know that very bad, can't help myself).
The Movie dose have large amounts of bad, idiotic & stupid plot/storyline, that tries to scare the teenager's not the adult kind of elements & types (as am becoming more of an adult it's showing on me), but I would hate being a babysitter (if I was a women) in that situation with a stranger always calling me & stalking me in the middle of nowhere, it's the fear & panic that effects me more (even know there wasn't as much in this movie but just imagine what it could be like, you get what I mean) because it's would be somewhat a really life situation but again it has a clever promise but can get dull at time & watching it for the fourth time and the remake is decent enough to watch for an update version of the original but dose lack & is somewhat pointless (If only they wrote a better script & more suspense that dose show to early in the film) as it's very obvious that the calls are coming from inside the house & knowing where the stranger was in the house but again it is quit chilling in the way if you look of it in real life & what you would do to try & stay alive (even know it wouldn't be that dull, it would be Sh*t scary in really live).
The acting was low average for a whole bunch of teen actor in a teen remake Thriller, which are by Camilla Belle as Jill Johnson, Thomas Flanagan, Katie Cassidy, Lance Henriksen, Tessa Thompson, Brian Geraghty, Clark Gregg, Derek de Lint, Kate Jennings Grant & David Denman (which not all of the cast are teenagers just half of the cast really), the director Simon West was not bad, but not great directing this film, while I liked how he did the intro, getting the stranger always in dark tone & in dark lighting where you could see his face until he driving past in a police car & with Camilla Belle as Jill Johnson as the stranger grabs her here hair she then shuts the doors & locks it & things of a way to get to the other door to get out alive, soo she pulls always & he rips abit of a chunk out of here hair & I always go ohhh every time when that happens, always gets me, very smart & to have guts for that (even though it wasn't really here hair, it was fake hair stuck to her head or something like that) and the ending dose give away the suspense that hype's you up in some good chills & thrills because of the way its set out, but doesn't live up to the promise and overall after seeing the movie four times its an Ok/average remake more that is pointless, you know what gone happen & dull mostly at the begging, but to me it still good to watch (but I thing four times is enough now).
(also the ending has always pissed me bloody off when I first watched it & still know that the pacing of the whole movie is quit slow, until you get to the good bit where you lose the suspense & that the ending goes really fast pacing, even know it's a decent ending but it need to be planned out better & slow that part of the Movie more so I can get it in my system better, because that what type of movie it's trying show (soo its very confusing really).
