Review of What's Love Got to Do with It? (2002) by Roy S — 16 Jun 2013
A music bio movie as good as any yet made. I have a couple of quibbles. One is the fact that the film portrays Tina as a naïf when she hooks up with Ike, when she actually already had a child with another guy.
The other is that while Bassett does an excellent job acting, her musculature (which resembles that of a running back) is distracting and, I confess, a bit intimidating. If actors can gain and lose 60 pounds for a role, the least she can do is lay off the curls and bench presses for a few months.
Fishburne is terrific, but ultimately it is the story of Tina's tumultuous partnership with Ike and her amazing comeback that really gives the movie its power. And Hollywood; if you read these posts (what am I saying, of course you do!), please make one of these for Janis Joplin.
THE ROSE was great, but it was fictional and made 33 years ago.
