Review of What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) by Ismael R — 09 Aug 2010
This is one of the movies that I should have watched long ago. I always heard how this movie garnered Leo his first Oscar nomination and how its Johnny Depp's most realistic character he'd ever played. So I thought I should give it a shot, and now I know why people love this movie.
Even though the story is very simple, Leonardo's preformance as the mentally disabled boy is flawless, sweet and heart breaking all at once. Depp's performance was so real and down to earth, and as he mentioned before, Gilbert was the closest character to his own personality in real life. If that were really Johnny Depp then he is indeed one of the best people in the world.
It's a great inspirational movie, almost as good as A Beautiful Mind.
