Review of What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) by Jared W — 14 Jan 2012
What's Eating Gilbert Grape is the sort of film that shows you what every other family drama should be, namely, heartfelt, real, and affecting. A family struggling with a dark past, and an ill housebound mother must try and stay together despite the mental illness of their youngest son.
Gilbert Grape must step up as the patriarch of the family after the death of his father but soon finds the confines of his home town is holding him back from being the person he wants to be. A film that thoroughly explores all of the themes it presents its audience with, it's the kind of movie that, upon completion, gives the viewer the sort of satisfaction one would usually only achieve by reading a book.
One may only have to watch this moving and deeply affecting story to understand why Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp are the kings of the industry today. Highly recommended.
