Review of What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) by Luke G — 21 Jun 2012
An emotional and fantastic film that truly delves deep into the emotions of a troubled, young man who has to deal with many family issues. Misunderstood and lonely, he finds comfort with an older woman and a future girlfriend.
His mentally disabled brother is his best friend who flies off the handle at a moment's notice, and his mother is an obese, lazy bum who won't do anything for herself after the death of her husband years earlier.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape bring the true meaning of family forward through a fantastic cast of actors playing brilliant performances. My praise is for one young Leonardo DiCaprio in the second role of his career earning him an Academy Award nomination.
DiCaprio's performed of a mentally disabled brother is mesmerizing and realistic. Though it goes through its boring and drawn out moments, the film drives its message home excellently.
