"What's Eating Gilbert Grape's" odd atmosphere contributes to its unique sentimentality and moving story. The performances are fantastic. Johnny Depp is great here and so is Juliette Lewis, but the performance that comes off scarily real is that of the early Leonardo DiCaprio.
He was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of the mentally handicapped Arnie, and it's very easy to see why.
