Review of What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) by Kimber M — 27 Sep 2015
I've watched this movie many times, and I am always drawn in by the incredible portrayal of the different characters, each of their individual motives and passions and fears and stories. I love the idea that we get to follow Gilbert through an escalation of various obstacles and conflicts, some conflicts bleeding into others, and how all the characters around him are right on his level.
Gilbert and his story and journey is no more important and no less important than that of those around him. Something brings me into the overall tone of this story and I can just easily follow along and live the life of Gilbert and his family, and when the movie is over I continue to think in this mindset long after, as if it truly touched me.
It's just a beautiful movie to me. I am inspired by the acting, the detailed character traits, flaws, and histories, and the seamless trudging through a tiny story in a tiny town.
