Review of Whatever Works (2009) by Erik O — 25 Jun 2010
A bitter old man talks, and talks, and talks... yet, never really says anything. Fantastic. I like Larry David, but everyone else is correct: He wasn't right for this part. I'm not sure anyone would be right for this part, though, because the material was so poor.
It felt like most of the actors were just reading off a script instead of inhabiting actual characters--who were basically all hollow stereotypes. Looking at the caliber of the cast, I'm willing to believe that had more to do with the writing than with the actors, themselves.
The film does start off with a certain charm, but that charm dies pretty quickly once it becomes apparent that it'll be harping on the same note for the duration of its running time.
