Review of What Would Jesus Buy? (2007) by Dane B — 29 May 2008
Good message, bad documentary. The point is made in 15-20 minutes, and the film merely regurgitates the same ideas for the remainder.
Rev. Billy and the gospel are also amusing early on, but I just don't think this is the most productive way of spreading the word. Their shocking talking points, "Stop shopping," and "What would Jesus buy?" grab attention, but the fact that they're a preachy gospel choir overstays the welcome. Nobody wants to be blankly told what to do, and their songs don't provide any information. Basically, they grab people's attention, tell them consumerism isn't what Christmas is all about, and then lose their audience due to sheer annoyance or being arrested.
