Review of What We Do in the Shadows (2014) by Liamexe — 25 Jan 2023
Four flatmates in New Zealand who are 21st-century vampires is perhaps the lowest point in the spectrum of "plausible," but a likeable ensemble, a razor-sharp script, and a healthy respect for the subject matter all work together to make this brilliant.
As proven by Deathgasm, Once Were Warriors, Stickmen, and (early) Peter Jackson: Bad Taste, Braindead, Meet the Feebles, etc., New Zealand cinema has always punched beyond its weight. The popularity of the so-called "Mockumentary" subgenre appears to depend only on an intimate knowledge of the subject genre that frequently exceeds that of its most celebrated exponents, such as Spinal Tap.
I can only think of one example from What We Do in the Shadows.
