Review of What to Expect When You're Expecting (2012) by Vincent D — 28 Sep 2013
The title of this movie reminded me of the movie "Nine Months" (1995) where the characters were reading the book with this title. That movie was hilarious. This movie had some comical moments, but the movie was too serious at times for comedy.
The problem with this movie is it didn't know what it wanted to be. It had a couple really dramatic moments, that seem like comedy just didn't belong. However, none of the dramatic portions of the plot were developed enough for this to be a real drama movie.
Likewise, it didn't have enough of a story to be a full fledged romance, and certainly not enough humor to be a comedy. The nature of the topic lent it to the romantic comedy genre I supposed, but overall the movie was lacking something.
Granted the movie had a cast of well known celebrities, including Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez. It was nice to see Matthew Morrison on the big screen among so many well known names. I thought while an insignificant role, Chris Rock was hysterical as a daddy, which is unusual because I'm not a real Chris Rock; but here, he was funny.
I think the movie would've been better if it had aimed more toward the humor, and didn't try to throw in these tearjerker moments. The movie should have a warning: it may cause you to be bipolar.
