Review of What Maisie Knew (2013) by Karen A — 01 Jun 2013
Fascinating story of a little girl who is caught between her crazy nasty whirling dervish of a mother, and cold aloof and absent father who get a divorce. It's an emotionally raw and devastating story that keeps us strictly in the POV of little Maisie.
We only know what she knows, picking up little snippets of adults having conversations, being shuttled off to court and then to one parent and then back to the other. It's a very effective reminder of what it used to be like to be utterly powerless and without a voice in your own life.
Julianne Moore is amazing as Maisie's mom, a woman we first pity and then eventually hate with a passion I almost never feel towards anyone, real or fictional. I'll tell ya, this movie is a winner.
