Review of What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984) by Archduke P — 13 Apr 2008
Pedro Almod³var may be accused of many things, being dull will not be one accusation that holds any ground after this. Dystopian, Socialist, Surrealist, even a hint of Feminism is flirted with, although that particular trope finds less success in this damning attack of post Franco Spain, and indeed Europe in a larger context.
Carmen Maura carries huge responsibillity for the wayward musings of Almod³var's hyperactive visions, succeeding only if through a case of life imitating art, via her own blood, sweat and tears.
Spain has provided stronger works of a nation never truly basking in self harmony, it'll far more taxing to find anything as wildly eccentric as this though.
