Review of What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984) by Tim M — 30 Nov 2010
An interesting early film by Pedro Almodovar, even if it doesn't reach the heights of his best work (Talk to Her, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). Almodovar is a master of familial relations, and he proves that with the character of the older son in the film.
He doesn't really like his parents, but he genuinely loves and cares about them, a feeling obviously common, but all too often made simplistic and stupid on screen. The film has a few mildly irritating "quirky" moments, like the lizard and the telekinetic girl, but it's still a solid piece.
