Review of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) by Al M — 10 Aug 2010
A creepy psychological thriller that features staggering performances from Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? asks what happens to child stars once they quit being children and what are the effects of fame upon celebrity families.
Baby Jane is a truly demented and brilliantly horrific character with her ghoulish features: she is an obviously aging woman who still tries to appear like a prepubescent child. In addition, she has been wracked by years of drinking and jealousy towards her sister who had a successful acting career as an adult.
Aldrich's film is an excoriating look at the effects of celebrity culture and the damage it can wreak upon individual identities as well as families.
