Review of What About Bob? (1991) by Tyler M — 31 Mar 2012
Baby steps to the movie... Baby steps to the review.
One of the funniest films ever made... How does Bill Murray do it? You just have to watch and see.
The Story: Dr. Marvin hates to be interrupted on vacation, but when Bob, a dependant obsessive compulsive patient tracks him down on vacation, trouble ensues. It's all about Dr. Marvin trying to get rid of Bob, and Bob not being able to take a hint. As the story progresses Dr. Marvin slowly slips into insanity, as Bob quickly gains the love and affection of his family. It's not stylish, and the cinematography isn't all that amazing, but the jokes are funny and Bill Murray is a laugh riot. If you don't laugh something's terribly wrong.
The Cast: Bill Murray, Richard Dreyfuss... There's a plethora of others here, but in all reality you're only watching it for these two. Bill Murray is Bob, the sweetest guy alive, just looking for some psychiatric help. One of his greatest roles here, the physical comedy is great and the way he speaks and recites his lines is brilliant. Perhaps the most loveable character in all of movie history. Richard Dreyfuss is Dr. Marvin, he's just a man that wants to take a nice vacation with his family. I wouldn't say it's his best performance, and not even his most memorable, but still very funny. Watching him slip into insanity is too funny to pass up. It's a love hate relationship, Bob loves Dr. Marvin, Dr. Marvin hates Bob... And it's a relationship that works great for the film.
One to Five Scale: 4.
It's just so damned funny. Any fan of Bill Murray will no doubt enjoy this film. It's an older one, but still worth seeking out and watching.
