Review of Wet Hot American Summer (2001) by Kalif V — 22 Jul 2008
This film tries to be overly clever and parody all the other campy camp movies out there. The result is a garbled pile of cow dung that is so bad it could be parodied in and of itself. It pinpoints exactly the commonality between the camp movies -- summer love affairs with a teary break-up, wacky counselors, etc.
But it only acknowledges what they are, and fails to actually parody them. What we are left with is a film which identifies all the stereotypes, yet fails to make fun of them effectively. The whole movie just rolls forward, one joke failing after the next, with no sign of relief.
It had potential, but the execution is just awful.
