Review of Westworld (1973) by Ryan G — 01 Jun 2008
Standout '70's action film about a future Fun-park, where vacationers can visit and play-act within a simulated Wild West. The place is run by a behind-the-scenes crew of technicians who maintain the robot inhabitants that "live" in the Old West town.
The film follows two main characters who are visitors to the park. What they experience is very realistic with bar-fights, shoot-outs, bank-robberies etc. All of this is part of the enjoyment and is the attraction for vacationers.
The drama begins when a particularly violent robot begins to act on it's own accord.
This film is well made. The script is quite good (for it's time), and even modern audiences will find something exciting or interesting about what plays out in the film.
Yul Brynner plays an excellent and flawless role as one of the robot inhabitants of the simulated town. He brings a certain eeriness to the film that no other actor could bring, I believe.
There is a good balance between the action/drama that takes place, and the film knows when to cut from the story and bring the physical events to a decent conclusion.
