Review of West Side Story (1961) by Eytan D — 03 Jul 2013
"West Side Story" is a classic staple in contemporary musicals. Though Richard Beymer, Natalie Wood, and Rita Moreno are all dubbed while singing, the movie gets everything else so right. Jerome Robbins' difficult and timeless choreography stuns, and all of the songs are utterly some of the most memorable pieces you will ever hear in a musical.
The best performers here are Rita Moreno and Russ Tamblyn. And it's impossible not to get a little moved by the film's tragic ending. Yes, "West Side Story" is derived from Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet," but on its own, the movie is classic.
