Review of Werewolves on Wheels (1971) by John M — 16 Jun 2016
Exploitation and grindhouse fans licking their chops after seeing the lobby poster for Werewolves on Wheels will leave disappointed and a little confused. The music isn't cheesy enough (it's actually pretty good), the acting isn't really that bad, and the nudity and violence are fairly tame.
In other words, Werewolves on Wheels isn't as fun as it should have been. Seemingly made with pretensions toward the film festival circuit instead of the drive-in, this movie's legitimately redeeming qualities (earnest storytelling, attempts at dramatic tension) don't mix well with its flower child dialogue, satanic rituals, and golden age wolfman costumes.
Mainly interesting for those left wondering how Easy Rider would have turned out if it were a monster movie, Werewolves on Wheels at the very least should be seen as an example of how much more interesting films were in the 1970's.
