Review of We're the Millers (2013) by Dana I — 07 Jan 2015
A low level drug dealer gets robbed and in order to make good on his debt to his boss, agrees to transport a "smidge" of drugs from Mexico to the United States. In order to keep the authorities from examining him too closely, he hires a stripper, a runaway and his next door neighbor to join in an RV as a typical American family on vacation.
Hilarity ensues.
Or at least that's the theory.
I'm beginning to think my sense of humor just isn't quite in sync with what what a majority of people find funny these days because I didn't find much of "We're the Millers" to be funny nor even terribly amusing. It's a movie that mines a lot of humor from misunderstandings (nothing wrong with that when done well) and characters creating complications for themselves -- both foreseen and unforeseen. And yet I can't help but feel that the premise is stretched a bit thin and I wasn't given enough reason to care about these characters to really enjoy the fun or to find things overly amusing or funny. And I guessed the complication headed our heroes way a bit before the movie lets us in on the secret.
