Review of Werckmeister Harmonies (2001) by Joey D — 12 Mar 2007
Bela Tarr seems to be the only director working today along with Alexandre Sukurov who is pushing the limits of cinematic form. This film, shot in his characteristically long takes, depicts a small town in Hungary falling into choas when a giant whale goes on show in the town centre.
The opening shot is a master class in the extended take.
