Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Alex E — 02 Jan 2009
The most painfully relevant film of 2008, Kelly Reichardt's somber and devastating portrait of a young woman just passing through speaks more clearly about the economic depression of the United States than five hours of CSPAN.
Reichardt is without question one of the most underappreciated filmmakers working today. She makes quiet, laconic films that need to be seen, and with Wendy and Lucy, she's made one that should have been seen a long time ago, before its eerily prophetic vision of economic hardship became an inescapable reality.
Michelle Williams gives one of the finest performances of the year.
