Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Alex H — 25 Dec 2012
Reichardt's unbearable head-scratcher Meek's Cutoff intrigued me enough to check out her catalog, and I'm glad I didn't write her off. The minimalist, realist (almost social realist), girl-and-her-dog drama Wendy and Lucy is just wonderful.
It's the polar opposite of Meek's Cutoff, in that it has characters and conversations and nice cinematography and comprehensible sound design and a story and all those things that make movies enjoyable and meaningful.
Wendy and Lucy is quiet and powerful and quietly powerful and highly recommendable. It's the sort of independent drama that puts Hollywood schlock to shame, as opposed to the sort of indie movie that shames indie movies at large.
