Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Randy M — 15 Jan 2009
I debated whether to give it the full 5, but why the heck not? This is one of the best films this year. A true testament to what great independent filmmaking can be. Set in present day, it portrays the struggles of a girl and her dog trying to make it to Alaska, seemingly the only place where she will be able to make a living.
It is heartbreaking, though not for the reason that most people assume. In portraying a section American life, the film perfectly captures the troubles of our society without painting it in bight colors, but in a somber and melancholy fashion.
I never thought a film about a girl and her dog starring Michelle Williams, and a Batman film, would be the most enlightening films about America this year.
