Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Troy K — 14 Dec 2013
Gotta say - was not a fan of this film. it was just so bland and boring. literally felt like reichardt took a camera and followed around a random person - I know that it was going for ultra-realism, but there is still a difference between filmmaking and just videotaping someone in their daily life - or else everyone would do it.
there still needs to be an artistry, a sense of creativity, the revelation of a truth, for a film to be engaging. I mean I could talk a lot about how it disappointed in all realms (visually, performance, character, structure, premise) but it would be a waste of time - all in all it just felt like such a stereotypically "female" film - and i'm not saying that from an anti-feminist perspective.
in fact, I think these films are anti-feminist in the way they portray women and female concerns as bland, boring, and somehow always situated around rape. I think women are brighter and more dynamic than reichardt would like to believe.
but that's just my opinion.
