Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Canem C — 05 May 2009
Wendy and Lucy tells the sad tale of Wendy (Michelle Williams), who is traveling to Alaska on a shoestring budget with only her dog Lucy for company. Once her car breaks down and she loses Lucy, her life seems to hit rock bottom.
This is a quiet film that really affected me. It's that gritty realism that is rarely seen in movies today and while it was quite depressing to sit through, it was also refreshing to see. I was honestly blown away by Michelle Williams' emotional performance in this.
It's really hard to watch this woman's life crumble while everyone else around her doesn't seem to care (with the exception of one kind spirted security guard). Williams is definitely the showcase here and turns a potentially boring film into a heart wrenching story of desperation, optimisim, and friendship.
