Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Melissa B — 22 Jul 2009
The Anti-Michael Bay. You could almost attach that label to director Kelly Reichardt, who holds back as much as that mindless Blockbuster Brute lets loose.
Super spare and haunting look at a few days in the life of homeless Wendy and her beloved dog Lucy. Just crumbs of a plot and little action, but a definite sense of time and place and a subtle and affecting use of shot sizes.
Williams is good, as she keeps it all inside save for a few pivotal scenes. Her one smile is memorable and contagious.
Stays with you.
