Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Kmm . — 14 Feb 2009
Oh my this is bleak. (Yes, I saw it by myself on Valentine's Day, but that's a topic for another time.) Kelly Reichardt is two films into her career and so far we've gotten two guys walking in the woods and a woman losing her dog.
For people who want movies to be novels, probably not enough happens. For those who are OK with cinematic short stories, Kelly's doing real well. Whew. Loneliness. Hope of a better life. Desperation.
Sorrow. Fleeting moments of kindness. And so very quiet. Michelle Williams does a hell of a job as the down-on-her-luck, not-thoroughly-likable indie girl Wendy. And lest you think this is a Thelma-and-Louise chick flick: Lucy is a dog.
We don't get Wendy's backstory--i.e. what she's running from--but it doesn't really matter. This is a snapshot from a life that seems mighty real in these troubled times.
