Review of Welcome to the Dollhouse (1996) by Richard D — 25 Dec 2007
A typically uncomfortable Todd Solondz film that forces you to see yourself in it's main character and realize that, yes, your life sometimes is as hopelessly fucked up as theirs. Welcome to the Dollhouse captures, with a terrible perfection, the misery of Jr.
High School, where no, you were not popular and, yes, you hated everything and everyone. It's a brutal movie, but it speaks undeniable truth about life (IE, when it sucks there just ain't no fixing it, though you can - and likely will - make it worse by trying).
A bold, brilliant, and excellent film.
