Review of Welcome to the Dollhouse (1996) by Leah P — 09 Sep 2008
After watching Palindromes and then this, I have to say I think Solondz isn't all that concerned with the quality of acting in his films. Although most of the main characters were good, there were some scenes where the acting was dire and the style of filming did nothing to hide it (the vulnerability did work sometimes, though- eg. when the mother gets the phone call about the tutu).
Worth watching for the dry humour (think Napoleon Dynamite but less silly) and Heather Matarazzo's performance, but the story's not going to have you on the edge of your seat (we've all been there but it doesn't mean we want to relive it for an hour and a half). Last 10 minutes were awesome but it doesn't leave a lasting impression.
