Review of Welcome to the Dollhouse (1996) by Lauren G — 20 Apr 2009
Happiness by same director is one of the more unique films I have ever seen. I also really got off on Welcome to the Dollhouse. I hated his film palindromes. After watching I sent this dvd over to my niece and nephew before returning it.
WOW what a reaction from them. They thought the movie was OK but the main character "Really Gross" This is really a cheesy insulting comedy. It is so good!! I know families just like this!! Ha Ha.
Another reviewer calls it the wrenching, brutally funny depiction of Dawns Life. Wow is it wrenching. Sick. Another Reviewer: "I thought it went overboard on the ridicule, harassment and language" and she goes on to prohibit her 17 year old from seeing it.
This is exactly why I LOVE This movie. The director succeed in every level getting his point across HUH?? YES!!! Maybe it takes a certain level of intellect or a great amount of open mindedness (with a sick sense of humor) to appreciate this film.
Even though its low budget and Solondz's first work IT MIGHT BE HIS BEST FILM. BUT THEN....HAPPINESS IS EVEN SICKER!! FOUR STARS MAYBE 5 STARS One of my favorite films of the 1990s. its only a movie its only a movie its only a movie its only a movie.
Say Hi to Dawn for me!!
