Review of Welcome to Marwen (2018) by Jon B — 25 Dec 2018
I think the critics miss the point of this movie. The main character played by Steve Carell was suffering from PTSD and that is how the majority of people suffer. When I watched I thought about all of the veterans returning home today and those I knew who served in Viet Nam.
PTSD is subtle and the people who suffer from trauma suffer in different but subtle ways. I knew a car mechanic who spent time in Viet Nam during the 1960s at the height of the war. He was perfectly normal and one of the nicest people I ever met.
One day a tire exploded in the garage. After the pop or explosion the man held out his air gun like a rifle, crouched down and started walking backwards into the center of the garage. I was told not to go near him until he finished his walk and he returned to "normal.
" Welcome to Marwell was the strongest reminder of what real people go through every day. The lesson for us all is empathy and understanding which is artistically embedded in the movie without gratiutous sex, nudity or violence.
Simple, subtle but very powerful.
