Review of Weekend at Bernie's II (1993) by Troy F — 08 Mar 2015

How do you make a sequel to a film with a character that was dead since the first? Well, YOU DON'T, but these clowns decided to make one anyways, and its clear that they didn't really know what to do with Bernie despite forming some sort of plot around it.

May I remind everyone that Weekend At Bernie's was no comedy classic, but it was dumb fun that took something tasteless and put it into funny circumstances that were beyond control and so didn't seem as tasteless. Problems here: 1) They're not at Bernie's house, so the title doesn't apply one bit here. 2) Bernie is used by the two characters to get money for their own greed, thereby going against what made the first film work and making this film function in unfashionably bad taste. 3) Bernie's got little to do other than play dead. So they throw in some insane voodoo plot with two voodoo henchmen who are painfully unfunny and terrible actors, who put some spell on Bernie that causes him to dance to music and well... do stuff. 4) They're not surrounded by drunk friends like they were in the first film or anything of the sort to make people believe Bernie is alive, they're surrounded by vacationers in Jamaica. SURELY, people here would notice something horribly wrong with a man who plops dead a few times and doesn't say anything. HOW DID YOU SNEAK A DEAD SMELLY CORPSE THROUGH THE AIRPORT?

There was nothing about this script that works, and they decided to make the film anyway. I refrain from giving this a zero because there was a small handful of stupid moments like Bernie's hump dance and a few rare moments where McCarthy and Silverman played up their usual character okay. Regardless, nothing else about this film is worth watching. Of course, you know to skip it, and I highly recommend you do. If you do watch it, you're probably watching it for the same reason I did: to confirm your curiosity around how truly bad it is.
