Review of Weekend at Bernie's (1989) by Segundo V — 16 Sep 2016
Whenever you think of a "stoner comedy", Weekend at Bernie's is the first movie that comes to mind, mainly because you have to be stoned to call something like this "funny".
Now, there's willing suspension of disbelief, and then there's just asking your audience to turn off their brains (people not noticing an obviously dead guy? that's already outlandish, but I can buy it, but a girl having sex with a corpse without noticing it being one and a killer saying that he's alive despite said killer FREAKING SHOT THE CORPSE HIMSELF!? I'm sorry, but that's asking too much).
But, you know what? I'm willing to forgive the bizzare premise and its... somehow even more bizzare execution if the main characters are likable. Sadly, that's not the case here.
Richard is a uptight guy who's hopelessly in love with an intern named Gwen and lies to her so he can get her and Larry is a loathesome, lazy shit.
Now, despite my opening statement, if you like the movie, that's totally fine, I don't judge people by their tastes in movies, but for anyone who hasn't seen the movie and is considering to watch it, don't except it to be a masterpiece as its cult following might lead you to believe.
