Review of We Own the Night (2007) by Shane G — 08 Feb 2009
Gritty crime thriller reminiscent of the 70s 'police procedurals' that were often directed by Sidney Lumet. Joaquin Phoenix takes centre stage as the conflicted son torn between his nightclub business and drug contacts, and safeguarding his police officer father and brother (Robert Duvall and Mark Wahlberg) tasked with bringing the drug lords down.
Both Phoenix and Wahlberg produced the film and their interest in making a dynamic and realistic film is evident in every frame. Credit should also be given for a great soundtrack packed with some 80s classics, although you may not share this view if you're not a fan of Blondie! The ambiguous title of the film comes from the motto of the NYPD Street Crimes Unit by the way.
