Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Grant S — 08 Jan 2013
Brilliant, yet incredibly harrowing and haunting, drama. Starts confusingly and and seemingly uninterestingly but quickly develops into a very intriguing tale, featuring the evilest child to exist since Regan in The Exorcist.
Writer/director Lynne Ramsay (who also wrote and directed Morvern Cellar) builds the dread and apprehension, slowly but surely. You know something terrible is going to happen, but she feeds you titbits of information to keep you hooked. Great plot and great direction.
Solid performances from Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly and newcomer Ezra Miller as the devil-child. However, it is the edgy, tightly-controlled direction which makes this movie.
Clearly demonstrates why you should never have children.
