Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Alberto G — 15 Jun 2014
There have been many movies and documentaries done about senseless school shootings. Dealing with psychopaths is nothing new in American cinema. Most of the movie villains are.
This movie is different in the way it handles the subject. It is shown form the killer's mother perspective and it's gut wrenching from start to finish.
The actual school rampage is never shown. And it doesn't need to. By then, the horror is already etched in our heads. When you are more repulsed by the antagonist than by the act itself, you have truly been touched by evil.
Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller (Kevin) and Jasper Newell (young Kevin) are the core that make this movie work to perfection. Tour-de-force performances for the trio.
The movie is told out of order, but it is a trick that works in it's favor. Finally, the songs are a collection of songs from various decades that are meant as contrast to the darkness that we are experiencing. Truly unnerving.
