Review of We Don't Live Here Anymore (2004) by Mister C — 01 Mar 2005
Last night I was fortunate enough to see Prozac Nation, based on Elizabeth Wurtzel's memoir of the same name, even though the movie is yet to be released in the States. It was supposed to be released during the week the 9/11 tragedy happened, but it was pulled because the studio worried the subject matter was too dark. And it is dark, I guess -- the movie is about one young woman's struggle to find self-acceptance while locked in the grip of major depression which is eventually relieved (somewhat) through her desire to get better and the help of antidepressants. I think it's pretty hard to portray depression on-screen, but the movie and Christina Ricci (who looks a lot like Wurtzel) do a pretty good job of it, showing us the mood swings, the insecurities, the attempts at pushing people away, trying to make one's self feel better by drinking and/or doing drugs, etc. Anyway, I really liked the movie (I love the book, too), but it should have been longer. It's only about 100 minutes long and it felt like there was so much more story there than what was shown. But you can always read the book and fill in the gaps, right?.

I've seen a couple of other movies lately -- We Don't Live Here Anymore and Rear Window. The latter is great of course; it's classic Hitchcock and one of my favorites of his. And I was lucky enough to see this in the theater, which was pretty cool. As for We Don't Live Here Anymore, it was just okay. I like Naomi Watts and Mark Ruffalo is pretty good in the movie, but the movie seemed a little muted, somewhat dead, kind of depressing. Basically, it's about two unhappy couples who are all friends with each other and they wind up sleeping with each other's spouses. It didn't have a huge impact on me, unlike Prozac Nation, and it's not likely to become a favorite like Rear Window. Oh well..
