Review of We Don't Live Here Anymore (2004) by Tutti D — 30 Dec 2008
One of the better films dealing with wants and desires and broken marriages/ relationships in the last few years, but emotionally stilted in many cases. It's hard these days in film to show true nature of "regular" people because what films bring us only seem like caricatures of what an emotionless marriage would look like. Andre Dubus, the author of the short story, is a brilliant author that really conveys the intricate psychological deconstruction of people in his work. The film lacks that feeling.
I saw this film a year after it opened, and really had high hopes for what was going to happen to the characters. There were many exciting scenarios, it never completely fell into place. I admire all the actors in the film. Naomi Watts is probably my favorite actress, and she knows what does and doesn't work when she's playing a character.
While not a perfect film dealing with these themes, it was still in a strange way an enjoyable film.
