Review of We Are What We Are (2010) by Chris H — 08 Nov 2010
It's done quite well, but the subject matter and setting is just so miserable and nasty that it's not something you can enjoy (and I'm a horror and gore fan). You sympathise with the three kids a little, but I found myself still rooting against them and wanting them dead at every turn.
The plot also takes some obvious turns and doesn't build into anything particularly clever. Some people don't comprehend the brother's actions at the end apparently; I take it he started eating his sister alive so that she would appear as a victim to the police and they thus wouldn't shoot her, hence the note he hands her - 'You're alive'.
So he did it to save her life. She doesn't turn away from cannibalism though, and instead it is implied she just returns to it alone. A lack of remorse here from any of this party is perhaps one reason this film is hard to warm to.
