Review of We Are the Night (2010) by Maximilian H — 25 Nov 2011
Ok, Germanic, lesbian-ish vampires first try to turn "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"* onto their hedonistic, capitalism run bloody amuk capering, then try to keep "The Girl from "Perfume""** (same girl, trust me, in the film it makes sense) in their ranks, all whilst hunky, noble policeman susses out the strange shenanigans going down on his watch (dammit!) and falls for the European version of a Manic Pixie Dreamgirl.
Propulsive, fun, (early) Luc Besson Euro-trashy aesthetic, shot kinetically but not hyper-kinetically with same pretty decent action set-pieces, solid acting, with some nifty things going on with what this particular vampirism entails. Just a solid fun, well done vampire action flick with just enough nods to germane zeitgeist concerns that it sneakily rises above just being simply enjoyable genre tale.
*American, Roomy Mara Lisbeth Salander, not Noomi Rapace Salander. There is only one Noomi, only substitutes.
**Omg, so you know I love "Perfume"? This is the first girl, the (spoilers) first kill, the one whose scent Grenouille spent the rest of his murder/smell spree trying to emulate (/spoilers). And while she's not as ethereally hot as Twyker shot her, so glad to see her as a lead, and a damn fine one at that.
