Review of We Are Still Here (2015) by Doyle A — 11 Jan 2016
An awesome throwback to the old-school, slow-burn horror films of the past, We Are Still Here is unsettling, at times very violent, and has a handful of decent scares that actually work! The film is very low-budget, and therefore uses less-than stellar actors, but their campy performances add to the experience; though Lisa Marie is truly awful and her line delivery made me cringe.
The plot follows grieving parents who recently lost their son in a car accident and move to a secluded home in a small town to start over, though the house and town hold a sinister secret that goes bump in the night.
The atmosphere of this film is what works best with some very good uses of apparitions in the background and as said before, the violence is startling and a lot bloodier than I had anticipated with a full-on, bloodbath in the climax.
There are many different ways to interpret the events and the back-story of the house and ghosts seems to have a couple key elements missing, but for a first-time director, it's a solid debut that doesn't spoon-feed all of the details.
It also features a fitting pre-titlecard sequence that put a smile on my face, but blink and you'll miss it!
