Review of We Are Marshall (2006) by J K — 08 Jan 2010
I grew up 40 miles from Marshall University and my own father graduated from there and was in school when this tragedy happened. To Huntington residents and Marshall alumni this is a sacred story. But wouldn't you know it Hollywood tried its damnedest to turn this tragedy into a joke and this film is proof positive.
Some of the dialogue is just plain dumb. It's as if the real-life tragedy wasn't tragic or interesting enough for the script writers so they injected a bunch of meaningless and schmaltzy lines into the film in an idiotic attempt to give it some punch.
IT DIDN'T NEED IT!!! The coach's end speech was just plain lame and angered me greatly. No real football coach will ever say those things. Bongo Shirtless Boy Matthew is a very poor choice for Coach Lengyel.
He looks absolutely NOTHING like the real coach. Worse yet Matthew didn't even bother capturing any of the nuances of the real coach in his acting performance. He's just Matthew McConaughey playing coach of the Marshall Thundering Herd, which, in essence, is McConaughey.
..a terrible actor. Matthew Fox was another poor choice. He just sits there. I was very sad to see this movie lacked so much of the heart of the original story. I really disliked this film and I despise Hollywood for ruining it.
I might've liked it better if they would have cast anyone other than Bongo Shirtless Boy Matthew as the lead role.
